Longtime volunteer/mentor, Randy Martin passes away

Sad news for the Harborcreek community on the passing of Randy Martin who dedicated 30 years to the youth of Harborcreek and the Harborcreek Little League organization.

Randy Martin has rounded third base and has headed home to be with our Lord on January 17, 2025 at the age of 72 after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Erie, PA on August 13, 1952 to the late Andrew and Florence Martin. Randy was a graduate of McDowell High School, class of 1970. From there he worked at Seaway Aluminum and then G.E. in Lawerence Park until he retired after he dedicated 36 years of his life to his work there in the M & P Lab. Randy was involved with the Harborcreek Little League for 30 years, starting when his daughters first played softball in elementary school. Randy was one of the few people to be honored with a ballfield named after him at Project 70. He loved working with their youth and T-ball clinics.  Keeping with softball, he joined and was a big part of the Erie Codgers, a senior softball league. If he wasn’t at the ball fields, you could find him at the YMCA in Harborcreek, usually teaching spin classes or swimming laps. He was also an active member of Our Lady of Mercy church in Harborcreek, PA. He was instrumental in getting the Kidsville Playground built at Rolling Ridge School as the head of volunteer recruitment and helping build the actual playground. Randy also loved to spend time with family and friends, sharing a glass or two of wine (especially Derby Red) at the vineyards listening to local bands. When he could, you would often see him riding his Harley, which he also loved. He never met a molasses or peanut butter cookie he didn’t love (or just peanut butter on a spoon). Randy always had a soft spot for all of his grand-dogs, including those who are no longer with us. Leaving a huge hole in our hearts, Randy is survived by his dedicated and supportive wife of 51 years, Kathy.  He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Martin Sprickman (David) and Emily Staub (Nate).  He is also survived by his beloved grandsons, Mason and Connor Sprickman (Alicyn), whom he loved playing cards with, especially a rousing game of UNO or Rummy.  He leaves behind his brother, John, his brothers-in-law Bob Neth (Debbie) and David Neth, his nieces and nephews, Chris, Malynda, Michael, Maryssa, Aaron, Stephen, and Rob, several cousins, and close friends who became family. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral home at 5151 Buffalo Road on January 20th at 2 to 4 o’clock PM or 6 to 8 o’clock PM and are invited to join us for a funeral service at Our Lady of Mercy Church on January 21 at 11 o’clock AM.  There will also be an additional viewing an hour before the service (starting at 10 o’clock AM) at the church for anyone who could not make it to the viewing the day before. Private interment to follow.
